Purdue House was built in 1887. It is one of only four remaining houses in Wichita that was built in the late 19th century Queen Anne architectural style. The house is named after the first owner of the house, Dr. George Clinton Purdue, a nephew of the founder of Purdue University. Dr. Purdue used the first floor for his medical practice while the family lived upstairs. Legend has it that Dr. Purdue treated Wyatt Earp for a dog bite injury in this house. Dr. Purdue arrived in Wichita in 1887 after declining the offer of chair of anatomy at Purdue University, making Wichita his home. In Wichita, he eventually became chief surgical member of the medical staff of Wichita Hospital, and he served for a time as secretary of the Kansas State Medical Association. He died in the prime of his career, of complications from appendicitis. Oddly enough, this was one of the ailments in which he had specialized.
